Glow

July 9, 2015

Last night I had the opportunity to go with some amazing women to visit and share a message at Girl’s Camp.  This is a camp our church holds every summer for youth age girls.  Their leaders are pretty awesome and they had everything planned out so well.  I was so impressed.  We had such a great time visiting and getting to know more of the girls.

At the end of our messages we shared a thought and had a hand out for the girls….
I was still thinking a lot about this this morning when I was reading blogs and websites  and came across this article.  ”Deciding Isn’t Enough”  I wish I could have read this yesterday.  It made me think so much more about what we said last night.

I love this. I love what it says.  Make a commitment.  Every single day.

Real success, happiness, and fulfillment of purpose entails making that decision right—every single day.

It’s not easy to commit every day.  It’s not always easy to stand up for what is right.  But people watch.  They see if you glow.  Even if you don’t think they are paying attention. It’s true, actions speak louder than words.  What do your actions say about you?

And it’s certainly not always easy to glow.  (Unless you have just finished a hard/long run…than you glow and probably stink a little too.)  But seriously, there are so many things,  everywhere you turn, trying to tear us down. Those girls at camp know this far better than me.  But when I was their age I thought that it would all magically get easier when I became an adult/got married/started a family.  All that hard stuff would disappear.

But it doesn’t.

I remember last fall I ran my 2nd 5K.  It was a cupcake race.  Halfway through the race you could stop and eat a cupcake. and for each cupcake you ate 1 minute would be subtracted off your time.  Any excuse to eat a cupcake, right?  I remember I ran that race, I ate 3 cupcakes, and I finished with a time I felt great about.  A personal record.  I felt so good.  Then they did awards and I saw the winner stand up, surrounded by (I counted) 6 children.  She beat my cupcake time by at least 8 minutes…and my real time by more.  I felt so defeated.  Plus she was skinnier than me and had one more kid!  Geez.  talk about dampering my glow.

I am my own biggest hurdle.  I can be my own worst enemy. Darn negative/comparison thoughts.  I don’t know why I let them get to me so much.

So when I read the article this morning it really made me think.  And reflect about what was said last night.  And come to the conclusion that I need to commit every single day. It’s something we should all strive for.  Whether’s running, parenting, in faith. Anything.

In every aspect of life, it matters to make the right decisions. But it’s what we do afterwards that makes those decisions right. It’s not merely the initial choosing, but the ongoing choice we make to choose.

You have to glow yourself. Stand up for what is right. Commit every single day.

It’s something I am going to work harder at.

I am committing every day.  Look for the goodBe the good. And giving comparison the boot.

Commitand Glow.
