Throw Back Review: The Winter Sea

October 29, 2015

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a Throw Back Thursday Review.  This has been a fun way for me to combine some of my old posts from my blogspot site to this new site.  This week I’ve been posting about some fun “spooky” or “halloweenish” books this week I couldn’t let this author pass by, she is one that has been at the front of my mind all week!  Although honestly, I don’t have much of a review that I wrote the first time to post….strange for a throw back, but keep reading….first, the details:

The Winter Sea
Susanna Kearsley
544 pages
Kindle Edition

From the Publisher:In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown.
Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next bestselling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write.
But when she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction, Carrie wonders if she might be dealing with ancestral memory, making her the only living person who knows the truth-the ultimate betrayal-that happened all those years ago, and that knowledge comes very close to destroying her…

Review:
A friend sent me this book as a birthday present a few years ago.  It is actually one of her favorite authors and she had read it and loved it.  I LOVE friends who share books with me!  One of the reasons I don’t really think this is one of my typical throw back reviews is I don’t really have a review from the first time I read this book.  I did rate this on my Goodreads account – and said:

4 1/2 stars it was a fun book it just took me a few chapters to get into it but then I couldn’t put it down.”

That is one fantastic review, I know.

But really – this is a fantastic book.  Susanna Kearsley comes up with these amazing Gothic/historical novels that have romance and suspense.  I had some of her books on my summer reading list this last year and I’ve picked up her books now and then and always enjoyed them.  I think I just read them all when I was taking my break from book reviews!

These books are spooky – and I’ve been wishing I had more time this week to get my hands on the one book by her sitting on my nightstand (Mariana).  I just don’t think I’ll have enough time to get around to it before Halloween though.  But that’s the thing…these books are GREAT for any time of the year.  They aren’t really like a halloweenish books and these are not usually my type of books, they are not over the top and have a touch of historical romance too – which totally make them my thing.

Leave me a comment and let me know, have you read any books by Kearsley?  Which ones?
Do you enjoy  the suspenseful/gothic/paranormal genre?

Don’t forget to follow My Reading Spot on Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook too if you haven’t already – and share with your friends!  I post more updates, pictures and articles there!
