Book Club Part 3: Out of My Mind

November 19, 2015

I have to start out by apologizing – I am SO sorry guys.  I started the month out so strong and was so excited to do this book club with ya’ll.  Then life got in the way. It took me way longer to finish the book than I expected and then I feel short really getting posts done this week.  But I’m working on giving myself grace this week and not worrying about it. I’m doing the best that I can.

I am finally getting around to posting about the last 3rd of this book. I took it with me last weekend when the older boys and I were selected to be extras on a local tv show (I can’t tell you too many details - but it’s funny and was so fun!)

But really guys…the last third is where it is at!  I could not put this book down.

The third part of the book starts with Melody and the quiz team.  How did you feel about Melody being on the quiz team?  How did you feel about Claire during the interview with the quiz team?  I might have wanted to throw something at Claire.  But what she did didn’t really surprise me.  It was typical Clair and it was typical for what a 5th grade mean girl would do.  And Mr. Dimming?!?!  I am so MAD at Mr. Dimming.

How do you think you would have coped with the airport situation?  Differently? The same? I really loved how Melody handled it.  I think it showed so much maturity.  I was so proud of her for wanting to go to go school the next day.

The scene when Melody was trying to stop her mom – when she wanted to go to school.  OH. MY. GOSH.  I am not even sure where to start with this.  I was having so much anxiety reading it. I felt SO bad for Melody.  She was trying so hard to communicate with her mom.  I wanted to cry.

In the back of the book there are discussion questions – I really love the one about how Melody handles the quiz team.  Do you think it was satisfying? What could she have done differently? I totally LOVED that part of the book.  I wanted to stand up and cheer for her.

Did you love this book?  I really loved it.  It might be one of my favorites from the entire year.  It really made me think and it has made me want to be a better friend and person to those around me.  I don’t think I’ve ever been a “Claire” (at least I hope not!) but I do think I’ve been like Rose occasionally, and said things and been insensitive.  I need to be better at that.  This book made me want to be better at that.

How did this book affect you?  What were your thoughts?
I really want to read this book to my kids.  I know there are teachers at our elementary school that have read it out loud to their class room.  I think EVERYONE could glean something from this book.

Leave a comment.  Let me know your thoughts.  If you haven’t finished this book – just wait. Wait until you get to this last section and I promise you will not be able to put it down!

I can’t wait – next week I’ll post a couple books for our December book club selection.  I can’t wait to show you some of the ideas and hear what book you want to read together.  And don’t forget, follow me on Facebook and Instagram for more updates!
