Throw Back Review: Pride and Prescience

November 12, 2015

Thursdays I feature a “throw back” review from my old blog.  I have so many books that I posted and loved on my old reading spot. So I’m throwing back to join them all together.

288 pages
Hard copy edition

From the Publisher:
Pride and Prescience (Or, A Truth Universally Acknowledged), a Mr. and Mrs. Darcy Mystery, embroils the joyous newlyweds Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy in a mystery involving one of their wedding guests.
The lovely Caroline Bingley is engaged to marry a rich and charismatic American. Unfortunately, this windswept courtship is marred by many strange events– nocturnal wanderings, spooked horses, carriage accidents, and even an apparent suicide attempt. Soon the whole Bingley family seems the target of a mysterious plot, with only the Darcys recognizing the danger.
Sinister forces are afoot and the Darcys must get to the bottom of the plot before the blushing bride descends into madness–or worse.

Review:
Random, but I woke up this morning thinking about these books.  I fully intended on coming into work today and writing out this blog post first thing.  Then the morning got crazy.  I planned on taking my 9 and 3 year old for their well child visits during my lunch break. That should have been easy too – but it wasn’t…

My 9 year old ended up getting a breathing treatment and sent to get a chest x-ray.  Geez! I think he’ll be just fine, just a bit of asthma.  But we’ve never dealt with that before.  Got to love the one more thing, right?
What a day it’s been!

So I’m really not sure why I woke up thinking about these books, but true story, I did!  Maybe I need to reread them to escape for a night.  I really do need a good book vacation! I read these so long ago!  We lived in Iowa when I read them.  The West Des Moines and Waukee Library  (if you are ever in that area)…they are both so fantastic and really saved me during those (husband-gone-a-ton-lonely-fake-single-mom) medical school years.  I found one book on a display and was hooked.

I didn’t realize until I started looking up the past book reviews today, but Bebris has some new books out too – there are 7 books in her Mr and Mrs. Darcy Mystery Series. (you can find all 7 here)  I had no idea!  I’ve only read 4.  It looks like I have some reading to do.

Pride and Prescience was the first book I read by Carrie, in October of 2007. You can read my throw back review here.  It was a bit predicable, but still fun.

Looking back through my old Reading Spot blog – I found these other reviews.  I seriously need to reread these books! I finished North by Northanger and then a year later I read Suspense and Sensibility.   You can read my reviews here and here.  I think I gave them lower stars than I would have if I had read them now.  I know they are predictable but sometimes that is just what I need! (Especially when it comes to mystery books, because I tend to be more of a chicken and can’t sleep at night if they are too scary.)

And last but not least- The Matters at Mansfield is the last book I read by Bebris, in 2010. (review posted here)  By this time we would have been living in Washington. Maybe I’m just on a library kick today – because I miss my Iowa libraries…but my Timehop app reminded me this morning that 6 years ago today that the library bond passed and that I could finally go and get a library card without paying $100 for it.  I can’t believe that was 6 years ago.  I can’t believe that we really had to pay $100 for a library card.  That is not even a joke!  Every town and community should have a library!

Back around to the books….I’m not sure where my head has been the last couple years, but I really need to get with it and finish the next couple books.  Maybe my library has them 🙂

Do you have any murder/mystery books you really enjoy?
Do you enjoy Pride and Prejudice variations? What is your favorite?
(If you know me – you know I LOVE them!)
