From the Publisher:

When Macy was chosen to join an elite group of children responsible for protecting ignorant mankind from the monsters of the Dark, she understood there isn’t time for speed bumps, and the arrival of the Ninth Chosen ten years late is one big bump. The Ninth is to one day lead all the Chosen in a final battle between Light and Dark forces, but the legendary warrior turns out to be Tolen Parks, a clueless and reclusive seventeen year-old whom Macy fears will not be their captain but instead their downfall. In an action-packed entertainer, Tolen and Macy are swept down a dangerous path that tests everything that Macy is, and brings out everything that Tolen can be, as they discover the power of choice, true friendship, integrity, and the incredible influence a single person can have on the world

Review:

So….I received an advanced copy of this book from the author and publisher in exchange for a review – it sounded like an interesting book and something that I normally enjoy.  But when I got my copy, I’ll admit right now, I  was in the middle of a  a really big historical fiction kick.  I can read a couple different books at one time – usually fiction and nonfiction, but when it comes to fiction, I tend to get on a theme kick – read a lot of historical romance at one time, or fantasy, or middle grade, you get the idea. I hope I’m not the only person who does this – but I do it a lot!  So anyway – I was really in the middle of reading everything historical fiction (specifically war fiction) when I got my advanced reader copy of this book.  I was a little worried about how much I would like it – and I really wanted to like it!

Despite all that was stacked up against this book – I still really liked it!  I thought it was fun and adventurous and really sucked me into the action.  The only thing that I would change about this book a little bit more background or base before the action started!  It was right off the bat.

The story is about two teens, Tolen and Macy, who have special powers and fight against a growing dark/evil force.  I really like the growing friendship/relationship and watching it develop throughout the book.  Since this is the first book of a series, I am really interested in reading more about these two and where it goes.

If you like fantasy and mystical creatures this book is full of them!  I also really loved the locations of this book, since many of the places are set in western states, it was easy for me to imagine and see in my mind. The plot and action is great, there is a good mix, and I really love the idea of a light versus dark battle and what they can represent.

K.A. Parkinson will be at the Salt Lake City ComicCom event this month and you can also read more about her books and events on her website – here.

This is a book I know my boys would really love. (And when I say boys, I mean my two little ones and the one I’m married to as well!)  It’s funny – sometimes I read a book that I really love and I know the exact person that would love it too.  I already recommended this book to a friend today.  Because I think this is one that I think she would love.  Read a-likes for this book would include: Brandon Mull, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, The Hobbit or World’s Aligned.

(Bonus – right now you can read the kindle version for free if you have Kindle Unlimited, and the kindle version is only $3.99 too!)

Super fun read that kept my interest and had me interested from the first chapter.  It is part of a series, and now I can’t wait for the next one!
