Updated: Homemade Hot Chocolate

October 18, 2017

Cold weather is here!  We haven’t even had snow yet, but my kids have already burned through two Costco size containers of hot chocolate!  We had a little math lesson the other day and I made them figure out how long a container would last.

If 5 kids have one cup of hot chocolate at breakfast and one after school how long will the container last if it has 50 servings?

Answer:  My cute 3rd grade girl figured out the correct answer pretty fast, but my teenage boy hit the nail on the head when he just answered: NOT LONG ENOUGH.

BINGO.

I love a good mug of hot chocolate too – and nothing is better on a cold winter morning than a comfy quilt, a good book and a cup of hot chocolate.

I’ve posted this recipe on my family blog before, and here too a few years ago- but this year we made a few changes.  I spent about $16 buying all the ingredients, (plus I think these ingredients are staple pantry items you have around your house so you wouldn’t need to buy them) but we made a double batch this morning and we still have enough ingredients to probably make at least 2 more more batches.  If you get four batches out of it, like I am thinking, it’s a total saver! Plus, it’s super easy!

Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix

2 cups granulated sugar

1 cup cocoa

2 1/2 cup powdered milk

1/2 cup extra creamy creamer

1/2 cup chocolate coffee creamer

1 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons cornstarch

In the past I have added a bag of milk chocolate chips chopped, but this year we found  some chocolate flavored creamer so we tried and it was YUMMY!

It’s SO easy – just dump it all in a huge bowl and mix!  I like to mix it in a blender too – just to make the powder super fine.

And guess what!?  All those giant containers that I get my IdealLean protein powder in are perfect for this!  And one scoop was perfect for my mug!

Is it cold where you are at yet?  Have you ever made your own hot chocolate mix?  I would love to hear what you think if you try this one!
