Summer is here! The kids finished their last day of school yesterday. We now have 8th, 5th, 3rd, 2nd and PreK behind us. I can’t believe that next year I’ll have one in high school and all five kids in school! (but not all day yet)
One of the first things we do each summer is make a summer bucket list. We aren’t fancy, we just write it on a poster board and tape it to the wall in the kitchen! It’s a system that’s been working great since we were in year round school 6 years ago and had long off track breaks to deal with. The last few years I’ve added another board with some summer rules. These are items that the kids have to do each morning and they don’t get any screen time until after noon and all the items are done on the list. One year I made the mistake of writing down the rule as “no screen time until after lunch” which caused our lunches to happen around 10:30! haha!
This year one thing the kids all wanted to add to the summer bucket list was a reading challenge. They want to read 25 books each, and any book counts. I can’t wait to see how this all plays out! We wanted a simple way to keep track so I came up with a reading list log. You can use it too – simply right click on the image below and print it out!
I am not sure I will read 25 books this summer – wouldn’t that be nice! But I have put together my summer reading list. These are six nonfiction and six fiction books that I hope to have time to read this summer. Some have been on my TBR list for so long, and some are new releases!
Non-Fiction
It was super hard for me to narrow this one down to 6. I just have a thing for nonfiction and personal development lately!
O
One Beautiful Dream, Jennifer Fulwiler
I saw this book featured on a Money Saving Mom (click for her review) recently and I usually love her recommendations. I think it looks great!
In the Middle of the Mess, Sheila Walsh
Another recommendation from Money Saving Mom (click for her review). Again – it looks so interesting!
I loved their Magnolia Story, so why not? Right? I think we could all learn a couple lessons from Chip!
I saw this book available on Netgalley and have been so interested in reading it – Carol went in the hospital with an infection and left with both legs and an arm gone! This sounds like a really good story of survival and triumph. -It’s a new release and one I hope to get to soon!
Where There’s Hope, Elizabeth Smart
I can’t wait to read this new release. I can’t wait to read more about her story and inspiration.
Money Making Mom, Crystal Paine
This would be a reread for me, but I really loved it the first time and I can always do with a refresher from Paine! She is one of my favorites!
Fiction:
Again – it was so hard to narrow this down to 6 books, but I have to draw the line somewhere! Seriously, my TBR list is a couple miles long and I am always adding to it!
Beneath a Scarlet Sky, Mark Sullivan
I borrowed this free with my Kindle Unlimted account and I always enjoy WWII historical novels, so I have big hopes for it, I added it to the list because I never make time to read it!
I loved Me Before You, but the second book was kinda just so-so for me. But I found a copy of this at the library recently so I’m putting this one at the top of my summer reading list and crossing my fingers. The librarian that helped me check out said she loved it more than the second! So there’s that?!
Everyone Brave is Forgiven, Chris Cleave
Again, I have had this one my kindle for a super long time and never made time to read it, so this summer is the time!
And another one. I have had it on my kindle for a while, I can’t wait to finally read it!
The Plastic Magician, Charlie Holmberg
I am a big fan of Holmberg and her Paper Magician series. I have read almost all her books, and hope to finish both of her newest ones this summer. I am starting with this one!
Kiss of the Spindle, Nancy Campbell Allen
If it’s a proper romance series book, just know I am going to read it. I am looking forward to this new release in July. I got an ARC that I hope to get to soon and post about before the release date. I have always enjoyed these books!

Don’t forget, to help us keep track of our summer reading goal I did come up with a simple reading log. You can use it too! Just right click on the image below, save it, print it and enjoy!
